Cup o Fight – just add hot water

A few years ago I was teaching a very quiet room when all of a sudden I heard fighting and slapping noises. I was shocked to see that two of my boy students had started fighting each other.

After breaking it up and sending them to the office, I learned they had a family issue between neighbors at home. They vowed never to do it again. It was the first thing I thought of when I imagined a sudden shift for the WordPress Daily Post prompt today.

I’ve noticed in recent years that kids, especially boys, are more prone to fight than in years past. I’ve also seen and heard examples of females fighting mercilessly. I have to wonder if it’s due to the violence in society, the fights we sometimes see going viral on Youtube, and the like. If we all gave a dose of 70’s "peace" wisdom to our kids I think the world would be a lot less violent.

I spend a good part of my social studies time teaching the peace giants like MLK, Ghandi, Pocohontas and American Indians still unnamed. I never miss an opportunity to show my students that "an eye for an eye leaves the whole world blind." -Ghandi

  1. I truly consider myself luck to have gone to fairly non-violent high school (not that way anymore though) thus I didn’t have to really put up with it. However, now I have children and it’s a constant worry- violence in school.

Oh how time have changed. Thanks for sharing.

  2. It’s been my experience that adults only complicate a confrontation. If kids aren’t allowed to solve their own problems the difference will resurface at another time, in another place.
