Thursday Thirteen

February 27th, 2008 by Sarah

Ever feel like you are the last human being around listening to some way out of date song that was rather questionable even in its prime? Needless to say I am beginning to think I am the queen of this movement. Worse yet, I don’t just enjoy one song from some of these obscure artists, I relish the entire album, and sometimes multiple albums. For this reason I am dedicating my Thursday Thirteen to some outlandish artists that most won’t admit to ever having enjoyed. Most of them were popular before my generation, however my mothers influence has left me humming them many years later. Before you read any further I should probably add the disclaimer that although I actually do listen to normal music as well, these are the ones that reveal my inner nerd.

1. Dr. Hook & The Medicine Show
hook

2. Eddie Rabbit- Greatest Hits- Damien cringes when this one makes it in the car.
eddie

3. Meatloaf- Bat Out of Hell- I groaned for weeks when my mom got this one in the mail, needless to say when his next album came out I was introducing it to her.

4. Cher- Heart of Stone- Back when cassette tapes weren’t convenient to fast forward, I learned even the “unknown” songs on this one and can still sing along without missing a lyric.

5. Michael Bolton- Greatest Hits

6. Paula Abdul- It is such a shame that Paula has turned out to be so sappy and annoying on American Idol, because I still dance and sing along to Forever your Girl.

7. Air Supply- Greatest Hits

8. Taylor Dayne- Can’t Fight Fate- My best friend & I made up a dance to this in Jr. High.

9. Hall & Oates- The Very Best of- I have even got my kids singing along to Private Eyes, poor things are going to grow up closet dweebs as well
hall

10. Culture Club- We used to watch the video of Karma Chameleon over and over again. That song can get me off the couch when ever I am in a rut.

11. George Michael- Faith- OOh, another mover.

12. Ace of Base- I saw the sign

13. Wilson Phillips-

One thing can be said about each and every one of these artists, their songs bring back memories from my youth that brighten my day every time.

Oh, I have enjoyed and been tortured by some of those. Can people guess which category Eddie Rabbit falls into? ;)

I’ve owned every one of them! Does that mean I may now sit at the cool kids’ table? ;)

I’m up here and here too.

  3. Kat's Krackerbox Says:

I remember when Air Supply came in concert to Little Rock in 1982. I was so mad because I wanted to go but I was two weeks over due (pregnant), my brother got to go, my cousins go to go (and one of them was my coach during labor). I did go into labor the night of the concert and my beautiful baby girl was born the next day at 12:35 p.m. Thanks for stopping by!

    I still love Air Supply.

I would listen to a lot of these artists now if I heard them on the radio.

Thanks for stopping by my blog

I’m right there with you–I own most of those as well–LOL! Just call us a couple of dweebs around here too :) I even saw Paula Abdul in concert back in the day and I listened to my Faith album so many times that I wore out the cassette. I just laugh every time that Ford commercial comes on “play artist Michael Bolton”. Oh and, not to long ago, the Culture Club one was in my car ahh–Karma Chameleon–my friend and I used that song for a project in high school–and it was old then. What fun–thanks for bringing back some musical memories!!

No Boy George tickets, but she and I are thinking of going to see the New Kids reunion tour just to make fools of ourselves–wanna come with us?! HAHHAHAHAHA

  7. Sarah Says:

Damien: I know you secretly sneak off with my Eddie Rabbit cd every chance you get (hee, hee)

Pop Tart: Yeaaa! I am not alone!!

Kat’s Krackerbox: I have a similar story for a Tim McGraw concert I missed because of a certain little boy who had just been born. These kids of ours had better appreciate us one day, lol.

Maribeth: I LOVE Air Supply, every time I see them being mocked on SNL though I can’t help but laugh.

Nicole: That commercial is a riot. Any time I put one of these CD’s in Damien just shakes his head like his whole drive to where ever is ruined, lol. Don’t worry though, he has some pretty bad ones himself to make up for it.

You know how I feel about “vintage” music. Love it. Ace of base…I still remember playing that TAPE in my 79 volkswagon Rabbit down the interstate, windows down, screaming out “I Saw The Sign” and forgetting all about how many times that dumb car died on me.

Welcome back to the blogosphere! I’ll try to keep it as short as possible because I like many of these artists as well. My two fave Dr. Hook songs are “Sylvia’s Mother” and “Sexy Eyes”… I think I’ll dust one of them off for this week’s radio show.

As for Air Supply, they are one of my favorite guilty pleasures. I’m at work right now and I wish I had my CD mixes that contain “Even the Nights Are Better” and “All Out of Love”.

I loved Taylor Dayne, but never owned the lp… It was steady enough radio fodder and had plenty of club play too so I never bought it. But I wish I had it now ;)
